The mDOT Center is an NIBIB-funded Biomedical Technology Resource Center (BTRC). It provides researchers with novel wearable AI technologies to discover, optimize, and deploy the next generation of mHealth interventions.

The mDOT Center is announcing the availability of the MOODS apps for WearOS smartwatches and smartphones (iOS or Android) for stress and stressor tracking. The MOODS apps were tested in a 100-day nationwide study and showed promising results. The smartwatch app used an AI model to detect stressful moments and prompted participants to rate their stress and describe the stressor if they rated their experience as stressful. Weekly visualizations of collected data allowed them to discover patterns in when, where, and why they get stressed. With only two minutes of interaction per day, participants reported increased stress awareness, and self-initiated 14 types of behavior changes, resulting in a 10% reduction in self-reported stress. Low burden and high utility led to a 30-day retention rate of 81% in this fully-remote study. For details, see the preprint of an upcoming publication.

The mDOT Center invites researchers with current or anticipated funding to use the MOODS technology in their studies to investigate the impact of momentary stress relief and self-reflection on clinical outcomes. Projects of interest include but are not limited to, the following. Use MOODS to develop innovative just-in-time Stress Interventions via micro-randomized trials (MRT) or conduct randomized control trials (RCT) to test the potential of MOODS to improve clinical outcomes for specific populations, either in conjunction with existing treatments / interventions or by itself.
